The Challenge
Our client, an oil and gas operator in Italy, was managing several ageing wells located on a remote island. Monitoring was conducted manually, with crews travelling to each well every few days. This process resulted in operational costs exceeding $50,000 per month. Manual data collection limited production visibility. Without real-time insight into well performance, it was difficult to determine when a well was offline or identify the root cause of production issues- costing thousands in reactive operational measures like repairs and replacements. As a result, downtime often went undetected for extended periods, leading to significant deferred revenue each month. The absence of IoT connectivity restricted optimisation efforts and created inefficiencies across the operation.
The Solution
To address these challenges, we deployed HiberHilo’s oil and gas IoT connectivity solution- pressure sensors were installed on the production tubing of each well to capture continuous performance data. Instead of relying on periodic manual readings, the operation transitioned to real-time data transmission via a secure satellite network.
This IoT-based oil and gas monitoring system provided continuous visibility into well performance through a centralised dashboard. Automated alerts were configured to notify operational teams of anomalies, enabling rapid response to production issues.
HiberHilo is equipped for straightforward retrofitting, allowing existing assets to be connected quickly and efficiently. That’s why this deployment required minimal infrastructure changes and was completed without halting production.
The Results So Far
With real-time monitoring in place, the operator significantly improved production optimization. Site visits were reduced by 77 percent, lowering field operational expenses while maintaining full visibility across all wells.
Downtime detection improved dramatically. Previously, identifying a production issue could take up to 24 hours. With automated alerts and continuous data monitoring, average detection time was reduced to approximately 30 minutes.
This shift from manual processes to oil and gas IoT connectivity strengthened operational control and enhanced long-term asset performance. Thanks to HiberHilo, it delivered measurable efficiency gains while establishing a scalable foundation for future optimisation.
