Battery and Maintenance for Remote Monitoring Systems

Simplifying maintenance for reliable IoT well monitoring

Maintenance plays a critical role in ensuring the long-term reliability of remote monitoring systems. HiberHilo is designed to minimize maintenance complexity, allowing internal engineering teams to manage systems without the need for specialized contractors.

Maintaining gateway performance

The HiberHilo gateway is built to operate in harsh environments, but periodic inspection remains important. An annual visual check is recommended to ensure the unit remains in optimal condition.

During inspection, particular attention should be given to signs of corrosion, especially around connectors. Minor corrosion does not typically impact performance, but more advanced corrosion can lead to downtime if left unaddressed. In cases where the condition is unclear, images can be shared with Hiber’s support team for assessment. If severe corrosion is identified, replacement units are provided.

For solar-powered gateways, battery levels should also be reviewed annually. Battery performance varies depending on environmental conditions and usage, but systems provide advance notifications when capacity drops below 20 percent. This allows sufficient time to plan maintenance without disrupting operations.

Sensor maintenance and battery management

Sensors should be inspected on a similar annual basis. As with gateways, corrosion is the primary factor to monitor. Any concerns can be reviewed by Hiber to determine whether replacement is required.

Sensor battery levels can be checked using a hazardous area-approved smartphone via Bluetooth. The Hiber application provides immediate visibility into battery status. With typical lifetimes ranging from three to five years, sensor batteries require minimal intervention.

Calibration and long-term accuracy

Sensors are calibrated during manufacturing and do not require calibration at installation. To maintain accuracy over time, a comparison with a reference sensor is recommended every five years. If recalibration is necessary, the sensor can be replaced to ensure continued performance. A simplified maintenance approach is essential for scalable remote monitoring in oil and gas operations. By reducing maintenance requirements and enabling proactive battery management, IoT-based monitoring systems support reliable data collection while minimizing operational effort.
